MRR NewsOpen Door Policy at MRRMaterial Resource Recovery Inc. (MRR) is a $ 3.5 million dollar waste treatment and metal reclamation facility which began operation last October in the Industrial Park. This state-of-the-art operation serves the natural gas industry across North America, by treating odourant mercaptan wastes through an environmentally sound thermal oxidation process. This process, with a Destruction Removal Efficiency of 99.99999%, is also used to treat residual PCBs in contaminated fluorescent light ballasts. An application to amend MRRs permits to allow the treatment of additional PCB wastes up to a maximum concentration of 3%, has been submitted and is awaiting the outcome of an Environmental Assessment Board hearing. MRR has developed a facility that efficiently treats wastes that have remained stockpiled for several years, due to their nature and the lack of suitable treatment options. By processing these wastes in an environmentally conscientious and effective manner at MRR, the metal components associated with fluorescent light ballasts and mercaptan-contaminated containers is made available for recycling. This process contributes significantly to waste treatment efforts, serving clients throughout North America. A proactive approach to operational and monitoring policies reinforces MRRs pledge to environmental protection by meeting and exceeding set guidelines. Continuous emissions monitoring, combined with groundwater and phytotoxicological sampling act as regular safeguards against environmental contamination, and emphasizes MRRs commitment to technology and accountability. In addition, MRR enforces detailed transportation protocols entailing the use of specialized vehicles and personnel trained to handle hazardous materials. As part of its open-door policy, MRR welcomes any member of the public to visit the plant to gain a first-hand perspective of the operation. As well, a Public Liaison committee has been established to act as a community watchdog group by reviewing and evaluating current and future processes as well as emission data generated at the plant.
