MRR NewsONTARIO ANNOUNCES COMPREHENSIVE HAZARDOUS WASTE PLANThe Ontario government is taking a major step forward in its environmental protection agenda with the launch of a comprehensive plan to handle the disposal and elimination of hazardous wastes, Environment Minister Elizabeth Witmer announced today. "Tougher hazardous waste laws will increase public accountability and protect human health," Witmer said. "When fully implemented, these initiatives will place Ontario among the world leaders in the reduction and management of hazardous waste." The plan comes into effect immediately with the release of three draft regulations to: * phase out existing hospital incinerators, a major source of mercury emissions and one of the province's largest emitters of dioxins and furans; Effective January 1, 2002, all generators are required to register their hazardous wastes annually rather than the current one-time only requirement. "The government's new rules will stimulate a demand for new technologies and services," said Skip Willis, president of the Ontario Environment Industry Association. "That's good news for the environment and for Ontario's environment industry."
