MRR NewsTECHNOLOGY AND ENVIRONMENTAL COMMITMENT DRIVES MRRCornwall – Material Resource Recovery today announced the installation of a state of the art purification filter designed to eliminate odours. The announcement was made its General Manager at an open house held atthe industrial park operation January 3. “The Carbtrol purification filter is the latest in a series of control devices designed to protect the community from unwanted emissions,” reports General Manager Damian Rodriguez. Odourant with its distinctive rotten egg smell is a naturally occurring substance mixed with natural gas. Its purpose is give a smell to the odourless gas and allows people to detect even the smallest of potentially dangerous gas leaks. Anyone walking through a marshy bog will have experienced the smell of odourant. “We’re probably one of the most misunderstood industries in the Cornwall region,” laments Rodriguez. “Ironically, we play an important role in making the environment a better place.” MRR’s principal activity is the removal of hazardous substances such a odourant and PCB’s from the environment using advanced technological methods. “Most people are aware of how dangerous PCB’s. Our process removes these persistent organic pollutants from the environment forever.” Rodriguez was quick to point out that recent odourant leaks posed no threat to the community. “Someone can smell as little as one part of odourant in a million parts of air. That’s the equivalent of one penny in $1 million. You’d need a concentration of 15000 parts per million before it would become hazardous to humans.” The MRR Cornwall operation is one of the most sophisticated of its kind in North America and has an enviable record of hazardous waste treatment. The Carbtrol installation will further enhance its ability to eliminate even the tiniest amounts of Mercaptan during processing. MRR also presented to the public a proposal for the construction of a temporary storage area for Department of Transport (DOT) approved sealed roll-off and marine containers containing soils, metal and concrete contaminated with PCB. "We are not applying to expand the amount of material we treat or to change other facets of the operation" said Rodriguez. "The addition will mean MRR can handle the material we receive more efficiently." |
